How to Fix Laptop Battery Not Charging

 March 23, 2021

By  Gregory

Charging a laptop that has a lower battery charge helps boost performance and increase daily productivity. However, the laptop battery not charging when you plug the power cable, and it is a common problem with portable computers. We are going to look at software & hardware-related laptop charging laptops and find out what we can do about it.

Laptop Battery & Socket Problems

I want to inform the readers that a battery is made out of Li-ion technology, and it isn’t something that you shouldn’t play around with it. You should consider booking an appointment with a certified engineer to have a look at the faulty battery because it can turn out to be a dangerous scenario.

You should not take the socket, power brick, and other components lightly because you can get the motherboard fried. If you believe that this is a major problem, then consult an engineer to avoid permanent damages.

Let us take a look at hardware-related solutions before moving to software-related solutions.

Power Cord

Many cheaper & expensive chargers have a replaceable cord, and you can change the cord to test the brick. You can spend a few bucks on a quality power cord and save lots of money on the entire package. Many cheaper or aftermarket cables end up harming the power brick & charging socket due to the low voltage output. We don’t encourage the readers to choose a low-quality product because it won’t work properly & doesn’t last long either.

Power Brick

A faulty brick could be the culprit because every charger package has a lifespan. You should consider connecting the laptop with another brick to confirm the suspicion. Always purchase a high-quality charging solution to avoid similar problems, and it will save your laptop’s internal components. We recommend the machine owners purchase an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) charging solution because it will improve the lifespan of laptops. We learned the hard way in the past, so do not make the mistake of purchasing cheaper or third-party chargers.

Examine Charging Solution for Wear & Tear

Your charger solution does not live in good conditions, and that’s the fate of all chargers in the world. Many device owners don’t even take care of the power brick & cable and let alone talking about cleaning it once in a while. Check the power brick & cable for wear & tear, which can interfere with day-to-day charging capabilities. Make sure to take time because you may find smaller cuts or wear or tear on the cable or on the brick itself. Kindly, do not try to fix the cable if you find a major tear because it could lead to permanent damage to the laptop.

Laptop Battery Health

What’s your battery health? The majority of the readers may now know that all batteries are made up of Li-ion technology. Check your battery health in Windows, Linux, and macOS machines and find out, if it is dead or coming near to life cycle end.

Windows:

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S and then search for “CMD” and open it as administrator.

Step 2: Now, copy & paste (powercfg /batteryreport) the command in CMD and then press enter to register the command.

Step 3: You will have the result mentioned below. We are using a desktop, so we got an error because there is no battery connected to the Windows machine.

“Battery life report saved to file patch C:\WINDOWS\system32\battery-report.html”

Step 4: Go to (C:\WINDOWS\system32\battery-report.html) location and find the report.

Step 5: Open the HTML file in a browser like Firefox, Chrome, Brave, etc.

I have to say that this is a complicated process because a battery report doesn’t give you a health report in percentage. You have to dig deeper and find out the current battery capacity and compare it with out-of-box capacity.

Linux:

The developers of Linux-based operating systems are ahead of the competition, and they added a dedicated option to check the battery health. You can check the battery health via a program or in the Power Statistics, and it is available in the majority of the Linux OS.

Step 1: Open “Settings” in your system.

Step 2: Click on “Power” to continue.

Step 3: Click on “Power Statistics” to find out about battery health.

In Linux OS, the battery statistics are viewed differently, so you have to conduct a little research to find out the command.

macOS:

Apple has clever developers in the house, and they have added a dedicated option to check battery health.

Step 1: Click on the Apple logo located at the top left corner.

Step 2: Click on “System Preferences” to continue.

Step 3: Click on “Battery” to continue.

Step 4: Click “Battery” again.

You will have two options on the screen, and each of them has its meaning, but Apple made it easy to comprehend.

Normal: The indication states that your laptop battery is doing well and it holds a good amount of charge.

Service Recommended: The indication states that the battery requires replacement or service.

Overall, we recommend the users seek professional assistance when they have a faulty battery or outdated battery. Do not dive into DIY tasks because a battery can explode depending on the current physical status and exposure.

Update Drivers

Windows added dedicated drivers to manage the laptop’s battery, and it is a basic driver that comes with Windows PC. First, we are going to uninstall the driver and then let Windows Update take care of the rest.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S and then search for “Device Manager” and then open it.

Step 2: Let Device Manager loads all devices including drivers.

Step 3: Find “Batteries” and click to reveal the drivers.

Note: We are using a desktop, so the battery option is not available on our machine.

Step 4: Click on “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” to select it.

Step 5: Click right-mouse click to reveal more options and then choose “Uninstall device” to remove it.

Step 6: A confirmation pop-up will show up, and click on “Uninstall” to delete it.

Step 7: Open “Settings” by pressing Windows Key + I button together.

Step 8:  Click on “Update & Security” to continue.

Step 9: Click on “Check for updates” and it will look for the missing drivers and install them automatically.

Let Windows Update install the latest or fresh drivers for laptop battery, and that’s how you can make most of the Microsoft drivers library.

Bottom Line

Your laptop battery not charging due to some hardware issues, and you can fix minor problems yourself. However, we don’t recommend the readers involve themselves in major repairs because lithium-ion batteries can explode or cause permanent damage to the motherboard. Kindly, book an appointment with a certified engineer to have a look at the machine and spend a few bucks to get it fixed.
